Carsten Henningsen is recognized as a pioneer in social and environmental investing having worked in the field more than 30 years.

He was the founder, former Chairman and CEO of Portfolio 21, a pioneer investment fund in the US, which, under his leadership, has integrated ESG (environmental, social and governance) factors into the investment process as early as 1982.

Portfolio 21 merged in 2015  with Boston-based Trillium Asset Management, and Carsten remains an owner of Trillium Asset Management.

At present he is one of the founders and investment advisors of Progressive Investment Management, which specializes in social and environmental investment management services in equity, balanced, and fixed income portfolios.

Beyond the investment industry, Carsten is a founding director of the NGO Community Friends, and its Carbon Game education program is used in schools in Africa, Asia and the USA. Carsten also developed a land reforestation program recently nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

He has served on the boards of The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment, 1000 Friends of Oregon Foundation, the Ecotrust Council, and the City of Portland Sustainable Industries Committee.

Carsten is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and Nyenrode, The Netherlands School of Business.
